Yes! Right! With a strategic and discerning script or brief, collecting critical intel during a Discovery Call can be easy and painless…for both you and your client.
So let’s firstly get very clear on what a Discovery call is!
A discovery call is your opportunity to build on the information gathered in the initial touchpoint brief (your initial touchpoint brief is usually captured via your website digital form)—with the primary objective to gather enough information about the project to provide an accurate and thorough quote.
An added bonus (or secondary objective) is to connect with the client and build upon the know, love and trust factor you have already established via your online presence and DM chats etc.
Every touch point is an opportunity to demonstrate your authority as a high-end brand designer and industry leader.
A Discovery Call is not a strategy session.
We don’t discuss design, concept or brand strategy at this point.
Reserve your creative intellectual property for the Brand Strategy Brief which takes place AFTER you have received a deposit or full payment.
Without payment from your client, there is no commitment. Any creative ideas and strategies shared at this point become the property of the client—by default. They can take your vision and make it their own. Be mindful to protect your creative and intellectual property until you know you are on the clock!
Allow approximately 1 hour for a Discovery Call. This may seem like a big investment of time, however, ‘form only’ information may not provide the full picture and may result in you underestimating the complexity of the project and underquoting.
Never underestimate the power of a face-to-face meeting. We highly recommend zoom meetings if you can’t meet in person. This visual format allows you to pick up on body language and to see firsthand how the client responds to your questions.
If this isn’t possible the next best option is a phone call, as with zoom…speaking to your client allows you to unveil any additional insights that may bubble to the surface in an informal conversation. Insights that may be missed when filling in a form only.
Before your meeting, set your intention for how you want it to unfold. If you’re feeling nervous, you could light a candle and doing a quick meditation, breathwork or yoga session. If you’re feeling flat (we’ve all been there!), pop your headphones on and try a 5 minute dance to reinvigorate and bring your most energetic self to the discovery call.
